Making Sense of Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services
Project management, creative direction, qualitative research, literature review, technical writing, pilot testing, case study interviews and development.
Now in its 4th edition, Making CLAS Happenis one of the most comprehensive guides to implementing the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services standards available in the country. The challenge, at the outset, was to take the then-daunting CLAS standards and develop a hands-on, soup-to-nuts guide for busy health providers. Our strategy was to turn the complex standards into something approachable and actionable. We synthesized and simplified the 14 standards into six areas for action, developed a clear visual reference (the CLAS flowchart–still used throughout OHE as a training tool), provided local examples of implementation (case studies), and plenty of hands-on-tools (templates, checklists, links). Developing MCH was an immersive and collaborative process: I met often with the CLAS Committee at OHE, interviewed dozens of public health professionals in the state, and incorporated feedback from more than 40 reviewers and pilot testers. Making CLAS Happen continues to be used throughout the state as the basis for training, curriculum and implementation.
